ABOUT:
Stephanie Harlow is a multi-media artist currently pursuing her MA in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins in London. She divides her time between London and her home in Preston, Lancashire, where she runs a bridal business while raising her two children.
She earned her BA from the University of Central Lancashire, focusing on photography that documented individuals often seen as societal "oddities" or those with compelling histories. Inspired by artists such as Diane Arbus, Alice Neel, and Käthe Kollwitz, her practice has since expanded to include painting, collage, etching, and silkscreen printing, all underpinned by rigorous research.
Harlow's work centres around female narratives that have been forgotten or diminished over time, exploring the psychological effects societal inequalities, trauma and sacrifice has on women. She is particularly interested in how privilege—or the lack thereof—shapes opportunities and outcomes, reflecting her own experiences growing up in a working-class family in the North of England. Through her art, she seeks to reintroduce these overlooked stories in a way that challenges viewers to examine their own moral positions within contemporary society.
Her most recent exhibition was a collaborative show at Hypha Gallery in Stratford. Themes of feminism, psychology, class, memory, and popular culture are central to her work.
