About:
Polina Filippova (b. 1991) is a London-based artist working with video objects and prints to explore languages of digital technology and time, using ideas of in-between-ness and image compression as a medium. Filippova graduated with a Master’s degree from Royal College of Art in 2021. In 2022, she was shortlisted for the UK New Artist of the Year prize. Filippova’s work has been exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery, Cromwell Place, Royal Scottish Academy, amongst others. Artworks are in private collections in the US, UK, Europe and the Middle East.
Filippova’s work captures moments between opposing forces—serenity and rage, clarity and obscurity, interior and exterior—creating emotional landscapes that acknowledge magic in ordinary moments, questioning how we experience time, presence and connection in the digital age. She is influenced by old masters’ painting, striving to achieve the painterly quality within her digital work. Her process involves compressing, distorting, and reprocessing images digitally and physically; recording moving-image through filters; printing; and re-filming, mirroring how we consume reality today through low-quality, compressed media. Her work asks us to pause, to reconsider the role of images in a world shaped by the speed and repetition of social media. By layering materials: paper, marble, and video, the artist questions the relationship between digital and physical, and how our human interactions can be defined and redefined within these spaces.
