About:

Karla Healy an award losing artist from Glasgow who has just completed a Masters in Fine Art Practice from Glasgow School of Art after graduating in 2023 from Painting and Printmaking with first class honours. She hates writing artist statements.

Karla's artistic practice is rooted in a critique of the pervasive neoliberal ideology that prioritises profit, individualism, and the commodification of life. Through figurative painting and printmaking, her most recent works explore the intersection of disability, capitalism, and the environment, focusing on the human condition within these oppressive systems. Inspired by Mark Fisher’s theories of capitalist realism and hauntology, Karla's work delves into how the past continues to haunt the present, shaping our contemporary experience.
Karla creates deliberately muted paintings that subvert conventional ideas of material value and indulgence. These works confront the unsettling reality of a society sleepwalking toward its demise, mired in collective inertia and willful ignorance. The use of retro-futurism and nostalgic melancholy in my art evokes discomfort rather than sentimentality, reflecting the homogenisation of market-driven society and the resulting loss of vibrancy and hope.

Overall, Karla's art challenges viewers to confront their complicity in global crises and to imagine alternative realities beyond the constraints of late capitalism. By aestheticising the anxieties and contradictions of our existence, she aims to provoke a critical examination of the forces that shape our lives.
