Franklyn Oliver (b. 1999) is a Mancunian composer and jaw harpist based in London. Using a variety of mediums, Franklyn’s practice often reflects on his relationship with his home city and addresses a variety of political topics. Among his influences, he includes Meredith Monk, Frank Zappa, Neil Luck, and Lili Boulanger. He has completed graduate and undergraduate studies at King’s College London, and Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance respectively. Throughout his studies, Franklyn has worked under the tutelage of Thomas Hyde, Stephen Montague, Deirdre Gribbin, Paul Newland, and Laura Bowler. He has had the privilege of collaborating with a variety of ensembles including Contemporary Music for All, Fretwork, and Glenn Parkes. Franklyn's practice also extends to academia, specialising in the significance of instrumental choices in political songwriting movements around the world, most notably the Nueva Canción songwriting tradition. In June 2024, he gave lectures on this topic at both New York University and The City University of New York as a part of the Mise-En Festival.
