Abbie Griffiths

Discipline:

sculptor, painter

Location:

London

ABOUT:

Abbie creates abstracted, classical, figurative sculptures using polyurethane spray foam, bed sheets, and construction materials such as concrete, rebar, and plaster, combining techniques to create these forms. Having studied traditional sculpture, Abbie builds in clay and takes molds, and creates casts directly from her own body. The final works are, to some extent, three-dimensional collages. Her work explores what it means to be a woman and what it means to be human - a domestic animal – and the ways in which we seek to create and maintain a particular domestic lifestyle. Curator, Rachel Stratton has described Abbie’s work as challenging categorization and embodying contradiction. She remarks, “The bed clothes bare the marks of years of use, a rejection of the static, youth of the classical ideal.”

SUPPORT WORKING CLASS CREATIVES (1).png

'Working Class Creatives' responds to a need which is too often overlooked in the arts; that of the barriers facing working-class artists from getting on in our sector. They are instrumental in initiating much-needed change that will see the art world become more inclusive and reflect the society it purports to serve. I often search their database in my research, it is a vital resource for any arts professional working in culture today. That they have got this far on so little financial resource is remarkable and I am excited to see what they will achieve with further support.” Beth Hughes, Curator, Arts Council Collection.
